Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the learning needs about cancer treatment for elderly with cancer.

Methods: The study subjects included 100 elderly with cancer. The study tool was developed by Lauer, Mruphy and Powers (1982). It measured the learning needs related to cancer treatment for cancer patients.

Results: The mean score of the learning needs in subjects was 3.36(¡¾.75) out of 5. It meant ¡®a little of learning needs¡¯. The factors of the highest learning needs were ¡®the plan of treatment decided upon by your physician¡¯, which ranked the top in the most difficult factors, took the first place among the most inquiring factors. According to the economic status of the general characteristics, the learning needs had statistically significant differences. In the disease characteristics, the learning needs showed statically significant difference depending on diagnosis, the period of diagnosis, the cancer family history, the interest in health care, and media such as TV or radio among the way to provide information.

Conclusion: this study presents that there are statically significant differences in the learning needs among elderly cancer patients, depending on the economic status, the diagnostic region, the cancer family history, the way to provide information, and the interests in health care. The quality of education and patient`s satisfaction with care will be improved when the demands of the elderly cancer patients are accurately identified and responded.
